Oatmeal "Wookie" Cookies

While savoring warm-from-the-oven cookies with Jordan and my mother she reported that the dessert was soft and chewy...  Chewie???  We looked at each other and laughed as the title came to us in an instant:

Chewie, the nick-name of the large, furry character, Chewbacca from Star Wars, is a member of the alien race called Wookies.  And "Wookie" rhymes with "cookie"... Before we knew it, the three of us had transformed a batch of seemingly ordinary baking into something even Han Solo could be proud of!

Starting with a Quaker Oats cookie recipe, I modified the ingredients a little to make everything vegan, even fat-free: no added oils!  But not to worry--they're still easy to bake and taste delicious!  I even think a big brown hairy space pilot "long ago, in a galaxy far far away..." might take a liking to them!  :D

Oatmeal "Wookie" Cookies
Makes about 3 dozen.

Organic Ingredients:
1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1 cup white sugar
2 mashed bananas or Ener-G egg replacer for 2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup white flour or whole-wheat flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
2 cups rolled oats, dry (quick or old fashioned)
1 cup raisins or vegan chocolate chips

Instructions:
Preheat oven to 375 F degrees.  Note: If you use whole wheat flour you will probably need to add 2 Tbsp of water or plant milk. Begin by beating together the sugars, banana/egg replacer, vanilla, and salt.  In separate bowl mix flour, baking soda, cinnamon, oats, and raisins.  Combine all ingredients.  Roll dough into small balls and place on a greased or ungreased cookie sheet.  Bake for 8-9 minutes or until golden brown.  Remove from oven and allow to cool on the pan for 3 minutes.  Transfer to wire rack.  Enjoy!

Hi Valerie :D
Thanks for following my blog! I thought I'd come and check yours out too!

This recipe looks delicious! I love their name too, even though I've never seen the star wars films - I think I just like words that rhyme! :D

I love the cute name! Who wouldn't want a "wookie" cookie? I'm always up for a new twist on a chocolate chip cookies :). One of my favorite recipes is a hybrid between oatmeal raisin and chocolate chip. Yum!

Have a lovely day!

Ahhh! I love these! I want some wookie cookies! The name is hilarious but those look like some seriously delicious cookies, so big and beautiful. I'm intrigued that the recipe calls for liquid aminos...I've got to give that a try...

Thank you so much Sooz, Mandiee, Amanda, and Voracious! Ladies, you brightened my day with your kind words!

Voracious, the liquid aminos ingredient is my and my husband's attempt at avoiding salt. We figure the aminos are better for us than common table salt. But perhaps not. Certainly, which ever ingredient you choose, the flavor of the finished product should be the same. And that's a comforting thought. :)

And I appreciated all of your enthusiasm about the Star Wars themed title! After I posted, I wondered to myself if I'd scare readers away with my geekiness. But in the end, I decided I've got to be true to myself. I am me! There's no use hiding it! :)

So, thanks for sticking by me, girls! Love you!

Hahaha, I always think of Star Wars too :) Does using braggs over salt alter the flavor at all? these cookies look wonderful!

Miss V??? You must be a Valerie also! That's very cool! I'm very glad you stopped by. I'll come visit your blog too! :)

Tess,

The Bragg's doesn't seem to affect the flavor any differently than table salt. We just try to avoid table salt at our house, that's what the Bragg's is all about. :)

Hey! and it's great to find another Star Wars fan out there, Tess!

I'll talk to you again soon! :D

These ARE delicious...have made twice now and they get RAVE reviews from adults and kids alike.

I have made them with 1) raisins, 2) chocolate chips and 3) cinnamon chips (available around the holidays). All are simply wonderful.

Dear Gail,

I think yours is the nicest comment I've ever received! As soon as I got it forwarded it my husband so he could bask in the joy of your kind words!

You see, he's the primary cookie-baker around our house. He's the one who played with this recipe and made it the delicious vegan treat that it is. I'm just the blogger--he's the chef.

You'll probably never read this message because you left your comment "anonymously", but I want you to know how much it means to us that you enjoy the recipe enough to come back and tell us so!

Best of everything to you, Gail! Happy Baking! :D
