my typical breakfast

"An apple a day keeps the doctor away"

I take this old mantra to heart every morning.  Thus, a very typical breakfast for me consists of a raw apple, pure and simple.  I always choose organic, so I feel safe about eating the fiber-dense skin.  Sometimes I bite right into my selection.  But usually, I opt to cut it into thin slices, just for ease of eating.  On the rare, but joyful occasion, I might even make fresh apple juice!  But my budget doesn't always allow for this kind of fun, except when my neighbors share their seasonal harvest with me in Autumn.

The variety pictured here is Fuji.  I like Fuji.  But I enjoy Gala and Golden Delicious, as well.  And I'd pick a sweet apple over a sour apple any day.  That's just me.  But no matter which type you choose, all apples appear to be good sources of Vitamin C, fiber, low calories, and lots of pure water content.

I like starting out my day with an apple.  I feel full for hours and well nourished.  And for those of you who are also interested in proper food combining, it's nice to know that the fruit is digested cleanly, on an empty stomach.  The apple is my regular breakfast choice, and I wouldn't have it any other way!

I've been having an apple in the morning before class and I too LOVE them! I like what you said about them being digested cleanly on an empty stomach. Some other fruits are too acidic for my tummy when it's empty but an apple is always a sure bet. I've also been eating almonds in the morning which are delicious and I can take them to class to munch on, just in case. Yellow apples are my fave, they're so sweet! But, sour apples are best in home made pies. Good post Valerie, I'm a sucker for fresh fruit. I don't know if theres anything better!

Hi Leah!

Another apple lover! Woo Hoo! Now I just sound like an owl... Oh dear... :)

I love almonds too. I have learned that RAW almonds are the best, nutrition wise. And they will digest better for you if you soak them over night in some water. Just rinse them off in the morning and pat dry. If you eat them that afternoon you don't need to worry about drying them back out. But if you're not planning on eating all that you soaked, just set the oven to 100 degrees and spread the nuts out on a cookies sheet for a few hours. They'll be all dry before you know it, but the low heat setting won't destroy any of the nutrients, enzymes, etc.

Maybe that was too much healthy living mumbo jumbo for you. If so, don't worry about it. The point is that I enjoy apples and almonds, just like you do! :)

Love you tons, my sister!

:)

MMmmmmm, yummy apples for breakfast! You and I both remember when I thought breakfast consisted of loads of sugar-cereal, cow juice, maybe some toast, and maybe a cooked juice of some sort. Now some freshly squeezed juice with 2 apples and a bananny sounds infinitely preferable.

Hey Lemur, try some fresh squeezed stuff instead of anything processed- when it is processed it get acidified and loses its benefits. Between an empty tummy and no pasteurization or concentration, you can't go wrong!
